Abstract

A photographic medium comprising a sensitized binder free layer of silver halide on a substrate is formed by vapour depositing the silver halide in the presence of a substance, other than silver, which reacts with the silver halide to form a sensitizer distributed through the silver halide. The silver halide layer is 0.1 to 0.5 microns thick and the reactable substance to form the sensitizer may be Fe, In, Te, Sn Pb and their salts such as the bromides. The substrate may be glass, paper, gelatine, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chlorides, polystyrene, polyamides, cellulose acetate and cellulose propionate. The substrate may also first be coated with a subbing layer. The sensitizer may be incorporated in the silver halide according to any of the following processes. (1) The silver halide and reactable substance are vapourized separately, and the vapours allowed to mix. (2) The silver halide and reactable substance are mixed together and vapourized together. (3) The halide vapour is allowed to pass over and contact the reactable substance placed between the halide source and the substrate. (4) The reactable substance is placed in contact with the molten silver halide. The use of Pb as the reactable substance produces a Pb halide sensitizer which provides a photographic medium which yields a strong print-out effect when briefly exposed to actinic radiation.
