Abstract
673,308. Photographic light-sensitive materials. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. 1. July 24, 1950 [July 26, 1949], No. 18453/50. Class 98 (ii). Photographic material comprises a support, at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, and at least one outer water-permeable layer containing a small amount of a compound of the formula wherein R is an alkyl radicle of 4 to 12 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2, and M is an alkali metal or ammonium radicle. The layer containing the compound may be a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, an antiabrasion layer, or a backing or antihalation layer, and the colloid binder of such layer may be gelatin, albumin, casein, agar-agar, polyvinyl alcohol, hydrolysed ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, or polydioxalane. The layer may contain a small amount of glyoxal. In the case of an antihalation layer, a dye or pigment or colloidal silver is also incorporated. Numerous suitable dyes are specified. The material may have emulsion layers, which may be sensitive to different portions of the spectrum, on opposite sides of a support, and the compound of the general formula is included in one or both such emulsion layers. In example 1, a cellulose acetate support is coated with an antihalation layer consisting of an aqueous solution of gelatin containing Nigrosine and sodium ptert. - octyl - phenoxyethoxyethylsulphonate. After drying, a gelatino silver halide emulsion is coated on to the opposite side of the support. In example 2, a gelatino silver halide emulsion on a cellulose acetate support is overcoated with an antiabrasion coating consisting of an aqueous solution of gelatin containing sodium p-tert.- octylphenoxyethoxyethyl sulphonate. In example 3, another gelatino silver halide emulsion is coated on the opposite side of the support of the material of example 2. In example 4, sodium p - tert. - octylphenoxyethoxyethyl sulphonate is added to a gelatino silver halide emulsion coated on a cellulose support. In example 5, cellulose acetate film is coated on one side with an aqueous gelatin solution containing Nigrosine, glyoxal, and sodium p-tert.- octylphenoxyethoxyethyl sulphonate and on the front side with a silver iodobromide emulsion and an antiabrasion coating of the kind described in example 2. The support may also be a baryta- or resin-coated paper, transparentized paper, or polyamide, cellulose nitrate, polyvinyl acetal, cellulose propionate, cellulose mixed ester, cellulose ether, polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate), a copolymer of vinyl chloride with acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate, or vinyl fluoride, polyvinyl acetate, or polyvinyl fluoride.
