Abstract

1,193,193. Laminating process. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 12 Sept., 1967 [13 Sept., 1966], No. 41812/67. Heading B5N. A coating process comprises applying e.g. by extrusion a sol-gel reversible composition containing gelatin for photographic light-sensitive elements to a surface of a drum 4 or rotary belt conveyor moving at a speed slower than that of a travelling support 1 e.g. a film of plastics material or triacetyl cellulose or paper, gelling the layer 7 thus formed by cooling the composition e.g. by internal cooling of the drum or conveyer or by blowing cold air from 6, stripping the layer from said surface, bridging the gelled layers across the gap between said surface and said support or a layer already formed on said support, the gelled layer thus being stretched by the difference in speed between the surface and the support and contacting the gelled layer with the surface of the support or the layer thereon to bond the gelled layer to the surface of the support or to the layer thereon. In a preferred embodiment, two of the compositions are applied simultaneously to the surface of the drum or conveyer to form two layers thereon, said two layers being applied to the surface of the support either on their own or together with two additional layers formed on a further drum or conveyer. The coating compositions may contain silver halide or be used to form backing, intermediate or protective layers for photographic elements.
