Abstract

1,186,655. Display devices. H. FROST & CO. Ltd. 29 Jan., 1969 [6 Feb., 1968; 13 Feb., 1968; 20 Feb., 1968; 1 March, 1968], Nos. 5775/68, 7001/68, 8171/68 and 9981/68. Heading G5C. [Also in Division F4] In an electric illumination device having flexible material 6 moving in an air flow behind a viewing screen 2, light from a source 9 behind the flexible material produces a flickering flame effect on the screen after passing the upper part of the flexible material, and light passing the lower part of the flexible material produces a flickering effect on a bed 3 of imitation solid fuel. A translucent screen may be mounted behind the upper part of the flexible material, Fig. 4 (not shown) and the lower part of the fuel bed may be lit by a second lamp 16, Fig. 6, below a baffle 17 so that a weakened flicker is produced in the lower part of the bed. The movement of light in the .upper part 3a of the fuel may be increased by a reflector, and the baffle 17 may have a reflective upper surface. The arrangement may be used in a cylindrical heater, Fig. 8, a hood 20 and sealed mock chimney forming with the screen 2<SP>1</SP> an airtight space in which air is circulated by a fan 19 round an inner screen 14<SP>1</SP> to move the material 6. The material may be in the form of flameshaped strips which may have blackened tips, or may be a sheet with flame-shaped cutouts or translucent parts. The viewing screen may have a light-diffusing surface formed by closely spaced horizontal lines, and the inner screen may have a .diffusing surface formed by closely spaced horizontal and vertical lines.
