A simulated flame effect is produced by apparatus wherein light from a lamp source 1 and flicker producing device 7 is reflected from a multiple reflecting surface comprising a series of corrugated metal strips 10 mounted between supports 13, 14. Knobs 16 provide means for varying the angle of inclination of the strips 10 to the horizontal. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the supports 13, 14 are curved and an additional similar reflecting surface together with associated light source are interposed between the source 1 and the strips 10. The reflecting strips 10 may be made of metal, glass or a transparent plastics material. In further embodiments (Figs. 12a to 12e) the light source is mounted either centrally or eccentrically on a platform which is rotated by a motor, the electric supply to the light source during rotation being cyclically interrupted. The strips 10 may be arranged to form a continuous concave reflecting surface facing the source 1 (Fig. 6a). In the alternative construction shown in Fig. 8, the light source 13 comprising a lighting tube is surrounded by a rotatable cylindrical screen 32 having irregular shaped opaque zones (see Fig. 9, not shown) forming the flicker producing means. Alternatively a similar pattern of zones may be silicon painted on to the tube 31 which is rotated by a motor (53, Fig. 13). Moulded wooden logs 39 together with plastics material 38 constitute a decorative screen 37.
