Abstract

978,364. Imitation fires; producing varying lighting effects. H. FROST & CO. Ltd. Aug. 27, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962 (2)], Nos. 30480/62 and 3048l/62. Headings F4R and F4W. An electrical illumination device for imitation fires or display appliances, includes suspended flexible material disposed behind a translucent viewing screen 7 and illuminated by lamps 15, said flexible material being caused, when the device is in operation, to move so as to vary the lighting effect visible through the screen. An oblong metal casing 2, which may be air-tight, is divided by partitions 3 into a central compartment 4 and two lateral ducts 5. The front face of the back wall 6 of compartment 4 is blackened. The front of compartment 4 is closed by the screen 7, the upper part 7a of which has an undulating horizontal cross-section as shown in Fig. 3, and may have an abraded light-diffusing surface thereon. Mounted in compartment 4 are upper and lower ladder-like wire frameworks 8, to the cross-bars 10 of which a plurality of flame-shaped, flame-coloured, flexible strips 11 are tethered at top and bottom respectively. When stationary each strip 11 is presented edgewise to the screen 7. Extending along the bottom of compartment 4 is a fan 12 driven by an electric motor (not shown) to produce an ascending air-flow past the strips 11, which air-flow returns to the fan 12 through the ducts 5 via ports 13, 14. Various other forms and arrangements of the flexible strips 11, Figs. 5-11 (not shown), are described. The wire frameworks 8 may have their cross-bars mounted obliquely, Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown). The suspended flexible material may be in the form of a single sheet, Figs. 14-17 (not shown). In a modification of the illumination device as shown in Fig. 20 mounted in an imitation solid fuel fire, a metal casing 2<SP>1</SP> is divided into front and rear compartments by a vertical rectangular partition, the resultant air-flow being as indicated in said Fig. 20. Specifications 957,591 and 978,365 are referred to.
