Abstract

118,542. Bailey, W. Jan. 2, 1918. Chucks. - Relates to bevel-closing collet chucks in which relative movement between the externally -coned spring collet and an internally-coned outer sleeve is carried by levers operated by a sliding ring, and consists in carrying the collet in a recess in the lathe spindle so that it does not move endways, and in moving the outer member by means of levers which take a bearing on the spindle, preferably through the medium of a self-adjusting bearing-piece. The collet 2 is closed by the backward movement of sliding member 13 which is screwed to a ring 8 slotted at 7 for the attachment of the levers 4. The spindle is slotted at 3 to receive the levers, which bear on a piece 9 sliding on the rounded end 11 of the slot in the spindle and provided with projections 10 to form fulcra for the levers. The ends 16 of the levers are pressed inwards to close the chuck by a bevelmouthed ring 17.
