118,496. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Oct. 11, 1917. Securing rolls on shafts.- In plate and like rolling- mills driven by toothed gearing only, to secure positive driving of the upper roll and yet prevent surfacemarking of the work owing to small differences in the speeds of the upper roll and the work and lower roll, a friction connexion is introduced between the upper roll and its driving universal shaft. The connexion consists of a cylindrical driving- member E, enclosing the coupling A<1> of the universal shaft A<3>, and embraced by a cylindrical driven member D fast on the spindle of the upper roll A. Screwadjusted springs G bear through radial plungers F on pads J surfaced with frictional material and bearing on the member E.
