Abstract
1,184,729. Refractory composition. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. 10 Aug., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966], No. 36727/67. Heading C1J. A refractory composition comprises a mixture of dry ingredients and 5-15% based on the weight of the dry ingredients of a colloidal silica solution said dry ingredients comprising by wt.: 10-30% tabular alumina, 5-20% calcined alumina, 8-15% alpha quartz, and 0À03-0À2% fused MgO, the remainder of the dry ingredients comprising a finely divided mixture of a fusion product comprising by weight: 30-60% unstabilized monoclinic ZrO2, 10-20% SiO2, and 30-50% Al2O3. The tabular alumina and the alpha quartz may be replaced by 15-30% of kyanite. The fusion product may be made by melting in an electric arc furnace zirconium silicate, ZrO2 and Al2O3. The refractory compositions may be fired and shaped to produce pouring tubes having a high resistance to thermal shock.
