Abstract

A fused cast alumina-silica composition which consists of 0.2-1.7% SiO2 and the remainder Al2O3 (by weight) is claimed per se. The total impurity content does not exceed 1% and includes not more than 0.1% iron and titanium oxides and not more than 0.6% alkali metal, particularly Na, Oxide. Bayer process alumina containing 99.2% Al2O3 and silica sand containing 99.4% SiO2 are charged into a furnace, preferably premixed, and melted, and the melt is cast and cooled. A refractory composition exemplified contained 0.2% SiO2, 0.16% Fe2O3, 0.4% other impurities and 99.24% Al2O3. Specification 265,847 is referred to.
