Abstract
The process is based on the use of inserts made of heat dried pastes of water (15-50 parts) to 100 parts of a mixture of several metallic and non-metallic oxides materials which is water-soluble and can be dissolved out after solidification of the casting; also that it yields sufficiently to take up the crystallization contraction, avoiding stress cracking. The paste is fire-proof and withstands the pouring of glass around it. Each cavity must have at least one orifice to the outside, for securing and dissolving-out access. Typical glass compositions contain (% wt.) 56-70 SiO2, 18-27 Al2O3, 3.4-4.5 Li2O with opt. up to 3% CaO, 2% ZnO 4.6 B2O3 6% TiO2 3% ZrO2 3% MgO, 1% Na2O 3% P2O5 in which SiO2+Al2O3 >=82, SiO2+Al2O3+B2O3+P2O5 = 86-91, CaO+MgO+ZnO+Na2O=2.5-6 SiO2+AL2O3+B2O3+Li2O is not >93, TiO2+ZrO=2.6 and the ratio CaO+MgO+ZnO+ Na2O+B2O3: Li2O 2.4 and SiO2:Al2O3 is not >3.8.
