Abstract
The stopper head for a bottom-pouring ladle is made of fused silica which is at least 85% amorphous, contains up to 3% other oxides including CaO, FeO, MgO, Na2O and K2O and up to 5% of a plasticizer, e.g. bentonite. The mix may contain 0.2-0.5% of a dispersant, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate, and water, and after vibratory casting into a plaster mould is heated to 1800 DEG F. The stopper heads may be dipped into tar or pitch at 400 DEG F. and then baked.
