Abstract
562,620. Vitreous enamels. EVERY, C. E. (Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co.). Jan. 6, 1943, No. 264. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] [Also in Group III] Zirconium oxide suitable for use as an opacifier for vitreous enamels is prepared by mixing sodium zirconium silicate, or an acid soluble compound formed by roasting zircon with an alkali, with at least 2¢ parts of molten caustic soda to each part of sodium zirconium silicate, the molten caustic soda being maintained at a temperature of 500-750‹ C. ; borax may be added to the mixture. Calcination at 600-800‹ C. follows the removal of the soluble sodium and silicon compounds. An enamel frit is described comprising 2¢ parts of zirconium oxide opacifier, 7 parts enameller's clay, 1/10 part of NaNO2, and 40 parts water. Another frit contains the opacifier and antimony.
