Abstract
569,282. Refractory glazes. C.U.R.A. PATENTS, Ltd., PIRANI, M., and HELLER, A. Nov. 11, 1943, Nos. 18759/43 and 24290/44. [Class 56] A glazing compound for use with refractory material, of which the surface at least is composed of zirconia or zirconium silicate, comprises a mixture consisting substantially wholly of finely-divided silica and a small proportion of ferric oxide as a flux. Three examples are given, two of which contain zircon sand and in one of these two a proportion of the ferric oxide is replaced by titanium dioxide. In mixing the ingredients it is preferred to frit the silica and the flux and then grind to pass a 240 mesh B.S.S. sieve, the zircon sand in its natural state of division being subsequently added. The resulting mixture may be used as a slip or a paint directly on to the refractory surface, or an intermediate coating of zirconia or zirconium silicate may previously be applied, and fired at a temperature of 1650‹ C. for 2 hours.
