1,184,183. Chromising ferrous articles. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. June 16, 1967 [June 7, 1966; Nov. 29, 1966; March 16, 1967; April 11, 1967], Nos.25415/66, 12445/67, 16641/67, and 16642/67. Heading C7F. A ferrous article which is in contact with another ferrous article, e. g. the coils of a wire or a steel strip, is chromized by coating with an adhesent layer of Cr, which may contain anotner metal, e.g. Ni, by e.g. electrolysis, spraying or rolling a layer of powdered Cr, coating with a metal halide, e. g. Fe, Ni, Co or Mn, and then heating to at least 750‹C. A first stage 350 to 700‹ C. is carried out in a purging gas, e. g. hydrogen, argon or helium. Ammonium chloride may be present with the metal halide.
