Abstract

1,181,659. Anode for an electrolytic cell. MURGATROYS'S SALT & CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 5, 1967 [Nov. 8, 1966]. No.49880/66. Heading C7B. An anode (which is suitable for use in a diaphragm cell for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides wherein the cell contains a plurality of parallel, vertically disposed anodes having their lower ends cast in a conducting metal) comprises a box-like structure open at each end of "Ti or similar metal", with at least two parallel plates having at least part of their outer facing surfaces plated with a "Pt group metal", with means at the lower edge to substantially prevent deformation of the structure on casting in the conducting metal base, the structure being such as to allow open access to the interior of the anode when the anode is in position in the cell. "Ti or similar metal" is defined as Ti, Nb or Ta or particular alloys of Ti, Nb or Ta. "Pt group metal" is defined as any of the metals Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir or alloys of any two or more such metals. Fig. 2 shows an anode comprising parallel plates 2, 3 of Ti or similar metal. The outer facing surfaces of the plates are coated with Pt. Slots 6 in the lower edges substantially prevent deformation during casting. A graphite bar 8 also helps in this respect. Channel section members 10, 11 strengthen the structure. Cut-away portions 5 at the sides of the box-like anode allow open access to its interior. Anodes, instead of or additionally to being slotted at their lower edges, may be crimped. The lower edges may be provided with holes so as to key into the casting metal, e. g. of Pb or Pb alloy. They may be tinned or platanized to ensure good electrical contact. The box-like structure of the anode may be constructed by folding from a single sheet of Ti or similar metal or may consist of two parts spot welded together. The structure may be strengthened by ribbing, bending of the plates at their edges and/or by internal spacers. The cell base may be constructed of concrete, protected mild steel or protected cast iron. After the anodes have been cast into the cell base the casting metal may be protected with bitumen or concrete.
