Abstract
1,181,376. Electro-depositing nickel. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. March 14, 1967 [March 24, 1966], No.11965/67. Heading C7B. Bright nickel is electro-deposited from an aqueous bath containing 50-140 g/1 Ni as nickel sulphamate, 0À3-1À5 g/1 Co, 0-10 g/1 S04 ion, 0-5 g/1 Cl ion and 30-40 g/1 H 3 BO 3 as a buffer, and having a pH of 3À5-4À5 and a temperature of 49-60‹C. The cathode current density is 5-100 A.S.F. and the bath is subjected to anodic oxidation with a subsidiary polarized insoluble anode, e.g. of C, Pt, platinized Ti or Ta, through which at least 2À 5% and preferably not more than 6% of the total plating current passes, to liberate oxygen from the electrolyte. The Co concentration can be maintained by periodically adding cobalt sulphamate to the bath, passing a proportion of the total plating current e.g. 1-10% through a separate anode of pure Co placed in the bath, or using an active Ni plating anode containing 1-10% Co and 0À01-0À03% S. The content of Co in the deposit may range from 6À53 to 19À6%
