Abstract

1,180,027. Two-part couplings. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 5 June, 1967 [22 June, 1966; 8 Aug., 1966], Nos. 27923/66 and 35378/66. Heading H2E. A connector for use with a flexible printed circuit comprises a plug part 13 adapted to support the flexible printed circuit, a socket part 11 releasably engageable with the plug part, and carrying a plurality of conductive terminals 28, Fig. 5, which engage exposed conductive areas of the flexible printed circuit when said socket part is engaged with said plug part, and a further plug part 13a similar to the first plug part 13 and engageable therewith to clamp the flexible printed circuit firmly to the first plug part. The plug part 13, moulded in synthetic resin, comprises a base 15 integral with a pair of posts 16 which have grooves 16a to take fixing screws. Integral with the posts and extending between them is a rib 17 projecting beyond the base, having longitudinal grooves 19 in its top and bottom surfaces and having its outer edge 18 rounded. A slot between the rib 17 and the base 15 allows the printed circuit to be threaded through the body 13, over the edge 18 of the rib 17 and bent into the grooves 19, its end being clamped by further plug part 13a. The socket part 11 also of synthetic resin (Fig. 4, not shown) is formed with a plurality of transversely extending stepped channels (25) each communicating at its narrow end with a longitudinal slot (26) and each housing a conductive terminal 28. Each terminal, Fig. 5, has a base portion 29 with tags 31 which when deformed grip and make contact with an inserted conductive lead. A tongue 32 secures each terminal in its channel, and a pair of resilient arms 34 extend from the channel and define a pair of circular portions 35 to engage exposed areas of the printed circuit located in the grooves 19 of rib 17 in the first part of the connector. A pair of resilient barbed latch members 27 extend from the body 11 and engage in a slot (22) in member 13 to retain the two connector parts in contact.
