An annular workpiece such as an inner ballbearing race is profiled in two stages, at least one of which comprises placing the workpiece 18, Fig. 1, over a cylindrical mandrel 20 having projecting ends 22 rolling on a surface such as a roller 14, between which and a juxtaposed surface 16 the workpiece is profiled. As desscribed, the workpiece 18 is positioned within a groove 24 in the roller 14 and is surrounded by a ring 26 to limit diametral spread. After rolling, the ring 26 is removed and the workpiece with the mandrel 20 is inserted in a similar machine, where the outer face of the workpiece is profiled by a roller 32, Fig. 3, to form a ball-receiving groove 12. In an alternative embodiment, a pre-profiled annular workpiece 34, Fig. 9, is inserted in a chuck 46 relative rotation and axial movement between which and an annular backing member 48 causes a spool roller 50 and a disc roller 52, both mounted on the member 48, to respectively form a flange and an undercut groove 42 in the workpiece 34. In another embodiment, a recess is rolled (or machined) into the inner face of the workpiece, after which the mandrel is replaced by one having flanges 66, 68, Fig. 12, surrounding each wall 70 of the recess. Upon rolling, the walls 70 are deformed inwardly to form undercut grooves at each corner of the recess. Alternatively, the walls 70 are initially bulged outwardly, whereupon they are pressed inwardly by rollers (77), Fig. 14, not shown) to form the undercut grooves, which may be finally shaped by oblique disc rollers (78), (Fig. 15, not shown). The profiling cavity may be defined by three or more rollers, or one roller may be contained within another. The rollers may be replaced by platens. Specification 1,179,952 is referred to.
