[Also in Division C1] Piezo-electric ceramics comprise the three components Pb(Mn<SP>1</SP>/ 3 Z<SP>2</SP>/ 3 )O 3 , PbTiO 3 and PbZrO 3 where Z is selected from the group consisting of Nb, Ta, Sb and Bi. The ceramics may be prepared by sintering a mixture of manganese carbonate or oxide and the other desired oxides or precursors thereof, crushing, shaping and sintering in an atmosphere of lead monoxide. A sintering atmosphere of lead monoxide and bismuth oxide is employed when the bismuth ceramic is prepared. The ceramic is activated by polarizing at either 100‹ C. or room temperature for one hour under an applied D.C. field of 20-50 kv./cm. The relative proportions of the three ingredients are extensively exemplified.
