Abstract

A vehicle crash protection device comprises a member 4 supported on an arm 26 and adapted to be secured in front of the vehicle driver or a passenger to prevent them being thrown forward in a crash, wherein the member 4 comprises a resilient pad 6 and a flanged shell 8 between which is sandwiched an inverted T-shaped member 14 having guide members 20, Hinged portions 30b and 30c of the arm 26 in the assembled condition of the device passing through a slot in the flange of shell 8 and being guided in members 20. Further portions 34 and 28 of the arm are connected by hexagonal-section bolt 36, and portions 28 and 30a are connected by a similar bolt 32. Portion 34 is screwed to the vehicle and the member 4 is slidably connected with arm portion 30c via stud 38 which passes through slot 24 in member 14. In the operation member 4 is positioned vertically with arm portions 30b, 30c in guides 20. The member 4 may be slid upward until stud 38 contacts the lower end of slot 24 and then hinged forward about the hinge between members 30b, 30c to an inoperative position. The arm portions 34, 28 and 30a may be rigidly connected or the arm replaced by a piston and cylinder device. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the device may be connected to the steering column and the arm portions hinged together in a manner which is yieldingly collapsible. Straps may be connected between the member 4 and the vehicle seat to prevent sideways movement of the driver or passenger.
