The central part 13 of a vehicle body is movable on tracks 27 under restraint of energy-absorbing devices 15, 17 in the event of frontal collision. A rack 35 on the body co-operates with a toothed eccentric 33 pivoted to the chassis to initiate upward movement of the part 13.
