1,177,311. Coated flexible webs. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 15 Feb., 1968, No. 7547/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] A process for coating a flexible web comprises passing the web between the nip formed by a gravure cylinder carrying a fluid coating composition and an impression roll, the surface velocity of the gravure cylinder being at least 1.8 times the velocity of the web and the nip force being 0.36 to 10.7 kg. per cm. of nip width and Brookfield viscosity of the coating composition (measured with No. 4 spindle at 50 r.p.m.) being 0.2 to 20 poises. The web may be of paper, cloth, cellulose esters, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. The coating composition may also include ferro-magnetic chromium dioxide in a binder of soya lecithin, a polyurethane and a vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer or it may be a light-sensitive gelatino silver halide emulsion.
