Abstract

1,120,098. Coating webs. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 15 Nov., 1966 [16 Nov., 1965], No. 51195/66. Heading D1L. In the coating of a continuously moving web 1, the web is floated from a support 4 as it passes the coating means 9 by means of a gas under pressure issuing through perforations in the support and acting on the undersurface of the web. The coating means may consist of either a doctor blade 9 and a coating liquid reservoir 12, as shown, or alternatively an inclined surface bead coating means (Fig. 3, not shown). Rollers 7 and 7' rotating with the same speed and in the same direction as the web together with a resistance plate 8 prevent flapping of the web due to abrupt changes in pressure. The application of a plurality of layers substantially simultaneously may be effected using either type of coating means or a combination of both types (Figures 4 and 5 not shown). The web may be a plastic film or a paper and the coating liquid a gelatino silver halide emulsion.
