834,525. Coating webs; coated fabrics. KODAK Ltd. Feb. 23, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955 (4)], No. 5590/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A flexible film paper or other web carrying two or more superposed coatings is made by forming a thin flowable layer of a solution of each coating material, so feeding the layers as to bring them into superposed surface contact with one another in, or before reaching, a bead formed between the feeding device and the web, and producing continuous relative movement between the bead and the web. The layers are stated to retain their identity and superposed relation in the bead and to be deposited in thickness corresponding the rate of supply of the respective solutions. The layers may be formed by flowing the solutions down inclined surfaces, singly or in superposed relation, by extruding them, or by various combinations of these methods. Apparatus is described for carrying out the invention and for setting and drying the coated layers. This apparatus, which comprises generally a feeding device and a webcarrying rotating drum, form the subject of Specifications 834,526, 834,527 and 834,528. The invention is particularly applicable to multi-coated cellulose acetate and other films, and papers, for colour and other photographic purposes, the solutions used being aqueous solutions of gelatine or polyvinyl alcohol as such or containing silver halides, with or without coating aids such as saponin or an alkyl sulphate, and being deposited to form lightsensitive and filtering layers, subbing layers, and clear cover layers. A three-layer gelatine solution coating is described the first and third layers of which contain a yellow colloidal silver dispersion and a black metallic silver dispersion respectively. The deposited layers may be set chemically, for example in the case of protein layers, by including formaldehyde in one layer and ammonia in an adjacent layer, these materials reacting by diffusion across the layers. In another example a clear layer of polyvinyl alcohol containing saponin and borax and a similar layer also containing silver bromide were deposited and subsequently set by fuming with ammonia. Dual coatings of aqueous solutions of a salt of ethyl cellulose phthalate, one of which contains carbon black, and coatings of aqueous dispersions of an acrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer, are also referred to. Specifications 716,080 and 721,064 also are referred to.
