Abstract

1,176,941. Portable bridges. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF. 4 May, 1967 [6 May, 1966], No. 20084/66. Heading E1G. A lightweight inflatable road bridge formed from a flexible envelope comprises approach ramps 3, 4 integral with or attached to a main beam I which is longitudinally compartmented by diaphragms 2. The compartments may be inflated to different pressures; alternatively the diaphragms 2 may be air-pervious. The beam I may, as shown, have tensile and compressive layers formed respectively by wires 8 and abutting slats 5 of wood, plastics or metal, similar slats 6, 7 being provided on the ramps. In a modification the slats 5 are replaced by a highpressure compartment in the envelope. The envelope is inflated in two stages:-firstly through a flap valve 10 and a sleeve 9 which incorporates an inflatable bung 11 and relief valve 12, and secondly through an independent non-return valve (not shown).
