Abstract
1,134,752. Inflatable fairings. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd. 8 March, 1966 [29 Jan., 1965], No. 4047/65. Heading B7W. An inflatable fairing, positioned for example on an aircraft fuselage behind a retractable radar -probe, comprises inflatable cells grouped on one side of an inflatable cover which, when the cells are inflated forms, on its other side, the aerodynamic surface of the fairing. The cells and the cover are of inextensible material, such as rubber-coated nylon, " Terylene " (Registered Trade Mark), or glass fibre. As described, the cells are tubes 1 approximately aligned with the airstream when inflated, and disposed side by side between inner and outer covers 3, 2. The tubes are bonded to each other and the covers, and are slightly flattened (Fig. 5, not shown), to increase the contact area. Adjacent tubes are vulcanized, and the tubes are sewed or bonded to the covers. The fairing is made by laying the inner cover over a former, then laying over it the tubes and the outer cover, pressure being then applied to partly flatten the tubes. The tubes may have individual inflation valves or may be interconnected by holes with restrictor or non- return valves.
