A hopper barge comprises two longitudinal buoyancy chambers 1, 2 hinged together beneath their decks, and one or more hydraulic piston/cylinder units 5 located above and hingedly connected to the decks. The hinged connection 10 of the piston-rod 6 and the hinged connection 12 of the cylinder 7 to the associated buoyancy chamber are equidistant from the vertical longitudinal centre plane of the barge and located near the middle of the piston-rod and the middle of the cylinder respectively.
