1,174,635. Measuring the moisture tension of soil; vacuum gauges. NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT GIDROMETEOROLOGICHESKOGO PRIBOROSTROENIA. Sept. 13, 1967, No.41714/67. Headings G1L and G1S. A device for measuring the moisture tension of soil comprises a tube 1, a micro-porous vessel 3 attached to one end of the tube and adapted for insertion into the soil, a vacuum sensing means comprising an air-tight chamber 7 having one wall formed by an elastic diaphragm 8 and means for releasably holding a measuring instrument 6 so as to permit mechanical interaction thereof with the diaphragm. A projection 19, fixed to a plate 18 secured to the diaphragm, actuates a finger 40 via a spring 11. The finger 40 is linked to the pointer 32 of the instrument which comprises a linear displacement indicator. The means for releasably holding the instrument 6 comprise inter engaging bushes which support the instrument in a housing 14, the hole in the housing being closed by a gate 16 when the instrument is removed. To use the device, a nut 42 is removed to allow the tube 1, the vessel 3 and the chamber 7 to be filled with water, holes 41 being formed in the tube to enable filling of the chamber. After replacement of the nut, the vessel 3 is inserted in the soil. If the soil contains little moisture, water is drawn out of the vessel 3 and the partial vacuum produced in the chamber 7 causes movement of the diaphragm and therefore of the pointer 32. A heat insulating casing 2 surrounds the lower portion of the tube.
