Abstract
1,174,461. Coating with cobalt and nickel. PERNIX ENTHONE. Jan.3, 1967 [Jan. 3, 1966], No.393/67. Heading C7F. A plastics surface is electrolessly coated with nickel, cobalt or a nickel-cobalt alloy by activating the surface and immersing the activated surface in an ammonia-free aqueous autocatalytic solution of a salt of nickel and/or a salt of cobalt, containing a complexing agent for metal ions and a hypophosphite, having a pH of 8-10 and at ambient temperature. The surface may be sensitized with stannous chloride or titanium chloride after a preliminary roughening by mechanical or chemical means, then be treated with a solution of a salt of a noble metal, such as gold, silver, platinum or palladium, to activate it prior to electroless coating. The complexing agent may be citric acid or a water-soluble salt of citric acid. Acidified palladium chloride or gold chloride solutions are preferred for use in activation. Tapes of plastics material may be coated with magnetic nickel-cobalt alloy.
