Abstract

1,174,397. Catheter assemblies. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 11 Aug., 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 24323/66. Heading A5R. A catheter assembly comprises a catheter tube 5, an annular connector device 1, and a protective tube 6 of flexible sheet material, one end of the protective tube being secured to the catheter tube and the other end being secured to the connector device. As shown, the protective tube 6 is secured to the catheter tube 5 and to the connector device 1 by rubber bands 7, 8 and the assembly is arranged such that by collapsing the protective tube 6 the catheter tube 5 can be inserted through the connector device into the patient. The connector device shown is suitable for fitment to a tracheostomy tube (10), Figures 2, 3 (not shown), and is formed with radial ducts 3 through which the patient can breath. The tracheostomy tube may include a T-junction connector allowing a respirator to be connected to the patient. Alternatively the connector device may be secured to a cap member (Figure 5, not shown) for the penis so that the catheter can be applied to the urethra. An alternative connector device, (Figure 4 not shown) is formed with longitudinal ducts (22) formed in the protective collar part 4, (21) and connecting the protective tube 6 to atmosphere. The parts of the assembly are of a plastics material such as polyethylene or polyvinylchloride and the assembly may be provided sterilised in a sealed bag 12.
