Abstract

1442144 Catheter ASTRA-SJUCO AB 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54593/73 Heading A5R A catheter intended for the submucous administration of a local anaesthetic into the cervix during childbirth comprises a tube 1 provided with a collar 2 adjacent to one end. The collar, which encircles the whole circumference of the tube, is flared out into the form of a funnel the largest diameter of which 3 is nearest to the opposite end of the tube. The catheter is made of a flexible plastics material such as polyethylene or polytetrafluoroethylene, and the object of the flared collar is to retain the catheter in place after insertion. After the delivery is finished the catheter is removed by drawing it backwards, when the collar turns inside out, and thus does not cause any enlargement of the puncture. The flared part of the collar may form an angle of 30‹ to 45‹ with the axis of the tube, and the tube may have a diameter of 1.5mm., with the largest diameter of the collar from 3.5 to 4.5 mm. The catheter is placed in the mucous membrane of the cervix to a depth of 3-4mm. by the use of an introduction tube and a pointed mandrel inserted into the catheter. In another embodiment, Figure 2 (not shown), the collar has from three to six slits in its flared part parallel to the tube axis, to make it more readily conformable with the outer surface of the tube.
