Abstract
1419835 Administering medication H H GROVES 15 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 12612/73 Heading A5R A device suitable for applying a medication to the anal canal, comprises first and second body-indissolvable bulbs connected by an elongate body-indissolvable flexible connecting member, and a body-indissolvable medication carried around the connecting member, characterised in that the connecting member together with the medication has any cross-sectional area thereof smaller than each of the respective largest cross-sectional areas of said first and second bulbs. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the bulbs 12 and 13 are connected by a tubular member 14. In use, the device is inserted into the anal canal until the bulb 13 engages the sphincter muscle. The provision of the bulbs 12, 13 maintains the device securely in the anal canal while the medication 16 slowly dissolves. The conical end 12' of the bulb 12 assists insertion. The device is given rigidity during insertion by locating a member 19 in the hollow tubular member 14. The member 14 may be injection moulded with the bulbs or it may be secured thereto by welding. The device of Fig. 4, (not shown), has a connecting member (24) provided with several smaller bulbs (28). The embodiment of Fig. 5, (not shown), has a connecting member (34) in the form of a nylon thread which extends through the bulb (33) to provide a tail portion (40) which assists in removal of the device. The embodiment of Fig. 6 has a connecting member 44 in the form of a thread which is provided with smaller bulbs 48, 48', adjacent the bulb 42, which support additional medication 46'. The embodiment of Fig. 7, (not shown), has bulbs (52, 53) connected by a thread (54) and has openings provided in the bulbs and in the medication (56) for receiving a rigid insertion member (59). The medication (56) of this embodiment extends in shallow layers (56, 56') around the bulbs. Fig. 8, (not shown), depicts a device having bulbs (62, 63) connected by an elastomeric thread. The embodiment of Fig. 10, (not shown), is provided with an absorbent swab (76) adjacent the bulb (33).
