Abstract

1,263,111. Evacuator apparatus. RICHARDS MFG. CO. 25 Sept., 1969 [25 Sept., 1968], No. 47345/69. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F1] An apparatus for withdrawing body fluids comprises a generally rectangular envelope of thin, flexible and preferably transparent material filled with a resilient material 17 having a substantial elastic recovery capacity and a high fluid retaining capacity, such as a reticulated foam material, and with two apertures 41 and 49 in an end wall, these apertures being in communication with two externally mounted sleeves 37 and 45 into one of which a thick-walled plastics tube 19 is matingly received. The tube 19 has a plurality of apertures 29 near its distal end portion 21. The envelope is mounted on a sheet of plastics material 63 to form the body 13 of the apparatus and the sheet 63 overlaps each end of the envelope to form two tabs 25 wherein apertures 67 are formed through which straps (27), Fig. 3 (not shown) may be passed. In use the distal end portion of the tube 19 is inserted into a wound or body cavity and its proximal end portion 31 is inserted into the sleeve 43 and with the sleeve 45 open, the body part 13 is compressed, a plug 51 placed in the sleeve 45, and the body then released so that fluid is drawn into the cells of the foam material 17. Alternatively the apertures 29 may be made in the centre part of the tube 19 and the distal end of thetube inserted into the sleeve 45 after compression of the body, or two tubes 19, one inserted into each of the sleeves 37 and 45, may be used. After fluid collection, the sleeve 37 is closed by a plug 59 and the whole apparatus may be discarded or the fluid squeezed out of the sponge through the sleeve 45.
