Abstract

1,218,597. Catheter apparatus. DOW CORNING CORP. 4 July, 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 31878/68. Heading A5R. A catheter placement unit comprises a tubular guide 11 able to be pressed against the body 12, an introducer needle (13) having a trocar 18 at one end and an enlargement 16 at the other, and a flexible catheter tube 22 which has a barb 24 at one end and able to be fitted into a slot (20) in the end of the trocar. The catheter may be inserted by moving the needle containing the catheter within the guide until (as shown) the needle and catheter project beyond the guide and enter the patient's flesh. The guide and needle may then be withdrawn leaving the catheter in position and held to the flesh by the resilient barb. The guide may be of a plastics or rubber material, the needle may comprise a polypropylene or rubber tube (15) joined to a stainless steel trocar 18, and the catheter may be of silicone rubber. In an alternative embodiment (Figures 5-7, not shown) the introducer needle has a knob (16') at one end and is caused to project from the guide into the flesh by pressing on the knob and moving the needle in the guide against the action of a spring (34).
