Abstract

1347340 Catheter insertion device VICRA STERILE INC 8 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 46965/71 Heading A5R A catheter insertion device which can be removed from the catheter after insertion thereof comprises a hollow needle 10 with a piercing end and secured at its other end to a hub 14, both needle and hub having longitudinal slots 54, 52; a flexible catheter 26 with one end disposed inside the needle 10; and a clip 20 which can be positioned to prevent the catheter 26 moving inside the needle 10. In the embodiment shown, clip 20 is movable in a slot 46 of a sleeve 16, the sleeve 16 being removably mounted on a projection 18 of the hub 14. Sleeve 16 and projection 18 define a channel 40. The clip 20 has a portion 42 which is located in the channel 40. In the position shown, the portion 42 presses the catheter 26 against a surface of the projection 18 and thereby secures it. This pressure may be released after insertion of the needle 10 in the body by moving the clip 20 forward to a region where the slot 46 of sleeve 16 is spaced further from the projection 18, as in Fig. 10 (not shown). The catheter 26 may then be slid through the needle into the body. The needle 10 is then withdrawn and the catheter 26 separated therefrom through slots 52, 54. The distal end of the catheter 26 can be surrounded by a flexible bag 32 secured to the sleeve 16, to define a sterile environment for a connector 28 and plug 30 which may terminate the catheter 26. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown), the clip (92) is mounted in a slot (83) of a modified hub (80) and is removable therefrom through an opening (94).
