Abstract

1437622 Catheter insertion device TRAVENOL LABORATORIES Inc 14 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 38227/75 Divided out of 1437621 Heading A5R A catheter insertion device comprises a longitudinally slotted insertion needle 12 having a hub 22, and a catheter 14 for location within the needle and having a hub 36, means being provided on the hubs for preventing accidental relative longitudinal movement between the needle and catheter during insertion, the needle and catheter being separated after insertion by applying lateral separating pressure. The hub 22 is provided with lugs 32 which engage a flange 48 of catheter hub 36 to prevent rearward movement, and shoulders 30 which engage shoulder 46 on hub 36 to prevent forward movement. The catheter 14 may be formed with an enlarged tapered portion or a cylindrical portion to seal the puncture made by the needle whereby flow of blood round the catheter after withdrawal of the needle is prevented. The needle hub may have a pair of laterally extending arms terminating in upstanding ears which may be grasped during forwarding movement of the catheter on removal of the needle. A luer plug 14 at the end of the catheter may carry a stylet.
