Abstract

484,499. Cannulas; probes. ALKIO, V. V. Nov. 16, 1936, Nos. 31366 and 31367. Convention dates, Dec. 23, 1935 and May 25, 1936. [Class 81 (ii)] A cannula for introduction into the lachrymal duct consists of a flexible tubular member 1 formed of closely wound turns of wire of silver or other noncorrodible material terminating in a wire 3 extending from the helical turns by which the cannula may be manipulated. Devices for use in inserting the cannula comprise a tubular style 4 having a finger piece 5 soldered to one end, a threading wire 6 having a knob 7 large enough to be retained by the style. The style with enclosed wire is inserted in the lachrymal duct from above and the knob 7 is then engaged by a hook inserted through the nostril and the wire 6 drawn out. The cannula is inserted through the nostril and guided by the wire 6 into the duct, a guide tube 11 being used to assist the insertion ; the wire 6 is then withdrawn through the nostril and the style removed. The cannula is left in the nostril for the desired time.
