Abstract

The device consists of two coaxial tubes, one of which can slide inside the other; the outer tube contains a cylindrical element of compressed cotton to act as an absorbent. In prior art infections of the lower female genital organs have been treated by the simple introduction of medicaments, in the form of ovules, by hand, or by the use of foams and ointments introduced by means of a syringe. In the new device the cotton acts as an absorbent for liqs. and undergoes a large increase in vol.; this element can be arranged to hold >=1 medicament so that it can be liberated, in a progressive manner, and, by its increase in vol., maintain this charge at least partly in contact with the parts to be treated. As the flow of the medicament is slow and prolonged, it can act for a long time on the vaginal walls; at the same time any local secretions in the neighbourhood can be absorbed by the cotton. A cord is provided in the element so that the latter can be withdrawn after use.
