Abstract

1,174,109. Mattresses, upholstery &c. T. S. HARGEST, C. P. ARTZ, C. D. THOMPSON and T. G. BLOCKER. 13 March, 1967 [17 March, 1966], No. 11587/67. Heading A4M. [Also in Division B8] A bed, particularly for patients with burns, or industrial apparatus for supporting unspecified objects, comprises a rectangular container 1, a metal grate 5 with legs 6 supported on the container bottom, a gas pervious sheet 3 overlying the grate 5, a layer 9 of fine granular material overlying the sheet 3, a further porous sheet 10 overlying the layer 9 with its edges draped over the rim of the container 1, and means for supplying gas under pressure through an inlet 11 to the space 4 beneath the grate 5 so that the gas passes upwardly through the layer 9 to fluidise the granular material on which a patient or object is supported. The granular material may be sand or beads of glass or plastics. The gas may be air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide enriched air. The gas supply compressor may have temperature and humidity controls. A temperature control 13 may be located in the space 4 beneath the grate 5. A screen 7 with lifting handles 8 may be raised through the layer 9 to remove foreign bodies and to separate adhered granules.
