Abstract

1285456 Air cushions &c C W DEE 25 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 58285/69 Heading A4M [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for supporting a part of the human body or other article, e. g. a glass article or a delicate instrument, comprises chambers inflated with air and having upper walls of thin, flexible sheet material such that the walls define a trough to receive the article, and includes a blower unit which supplies air to the chambers, the air escaping through porous discs 10 in the upper walls 1-4 within the confines of the trough to provide a steady flow of air between these walls and the article sufficient to support the article in a raised position out of contact with the upper walls. The upper layers 1-4 are secured, e.g. by heat sealing, to a lower layer 5 along contour lines 9. Peripheral flanges 6 include eyelets 7 to receive an anchoring cord 8. The air supply may include units for filtering, sterilizing and heating the air.
