Abstract

1,173,724. Syringes. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND. May 17, 1968 [May 17, 1967], No.23519/68. Heading F1R. Apparatus for delivering a number of accurately measured drops simultaneously, e.g. in microtitre arrangements, comprises a plurality of dropper syringes with their barrels 19 mounted on a fixed frame 17, 18 and their plungers 20 connected to a cross-bar 21 slidably supported by springs 22 on posts 11 and 12 and moved downwardly by a hydraulic ram. The ram comprises a syringe barrel 14 mounted on crossbar 13 on posts 11, 12, and a plunger 16 connected to movable cross-bar 21. A syringe 23 of adjustable stroke is connected by three-way valves 23A and 27 to syringe barrel 14 and a reservoir 25. The stroke of syringe 23 is adjusted so that each stroke causes one drop of the required volume to be dispensed by each dropper syringe. The dropper syringes are filled by immersing their tips in containers of the liquid to be dispensed, opening stopcock 28 and raising cross-bar 21 by hand. Syringe 23 is operated with stopcock 28 open to remove air from the hydraulic system. Base-plate 10 may be lowered to accommodate the liquid containers when filling the dropper syringes. A microtitre plate 31 to which the drops are delivered is positioned by guides 30.
