Abstract
298,340. Geary, J., and Hill, W. G. Sept. 7, 1927. Cam-actuated pumps; reciprocating-cylinder pumps; stroke, varying; valves, arrangement of. - Apparatus of the type used for filling tarts with jam &c. comprises a cylinder 14 moving in a guide 15, and a piston 22 moving in the cylinder so as to draw a quantity of jam &c. from a container 7 through ports 21 into the cylinder, and force the same through a discharge orifice 19 controlled by a valve 23. The cylinder and piston are operated by cams 34, and the valve is actuated either by springs or by another cam. At the commencement of the filling operation, the cylinder, piston, and valve are raised together to the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to uncover the ports 21. The piston is then raised farther to draw in the desired quantity of jam &c. through these ports, after which all the parts move downwards together until the ports 21 are closed. The valve is then held stationary so as to open the discharge orifice 19, through which the piston then forces the jam &c., finally closing the valve. The quantity delivered may be adjusted by a screw 39 which varies the position of the upper roller 37 of the cam actuating the piston. A row of tarts is filled by moving the apparatus along rails 10, and several rows by movement across other rails at right angles.
