1,173,495. Projectile fuzes. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd. 28 March, 1968 [6 March, 1967], No. 10529/67. Heading F3A. In a V.T. fuze, the electric cell electrolyte provides hydraulic clamping for the mechanical aiming mechanism during the initial acceleration period. After a predetermined acceleration, the electrolyte is admitted to the cell and an igniter circuit is completed. During initial acceleration the piston, 18, moves to its right against spring 22, the membranes, 36 and 40 are broken and electrolyte, in cavity 13, flows into the cell cavity, 12. Electrolyte flows through the flap-valve, 20 to the left side of the piston. Centrifugal action urges the electrolyte into 12. Piston, 18, engages 24, on rod 15, shears section, 26, and urges rod end 44 against latch 31 which is maintained permanently but of engagement with shutter 27 by the piece 33. At the end of the acceleration period, piston 18 and rod 15 are withdrawn inwards, by the spring 18, subject to hydraulic damping. The shutter, 27, is now rotated rapidly by the spring 29, and the igniter, 48, and detonator in 27 are brought into alignment.
