Abstract

1,172,416. Lamp fittings. PYLE-NATIONAL CO. 17 April, 1967, No. 17599/67. Heading F4R. An explosion-proof joint between two separable parts of a lamp fitting is characterized by a gasket made of fluorocarbon resin. The joint may be of the glass to glass, metal to metal, or glass to metal type, and in a preferred embodiment a lens or globe is sealed to a metal lamp housing by means of a gasket of polytetrafluoroethylene clamped between flat abutment surfaces on the two parts with the aid of a retaining ring screwed on to the housing to hold the parts together. One of the abutment surfaces is formed with a groove in which the gasket is seated. A second gasket of P.T.F.E. may be provided between the lens and an abutting flange of the retaining ring. Fluorinated ethylene propylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride are also suitable materials for making the gasket, which may be thinly coated with a soft metal such as aluminium, cadmium or tin to provide cold metallurgical adhesion with abutting metal surfaces.
