Abstract

1326104 Joint-making packing; tube joints R R REDDY 16 Nov 1970 54505/70 Headings F2B and F2G A seal between abutting surfaces 17, 23 in, for example, a tube joint comprises a ring groove 30 in the abutting surface 17 formed by a bearing surface 32, a backing lip surface 33 extending from the bearing surface to the abutment surface to form a re-entrant lip which extends towards the source of leakage and a relief surface 35 extending between the bearing surface and the abutment surface, and a resilient sealing ring 40 of, for example, P.T.F.E., seated within the groove and having a pair of angularlyspaced lips 41, 42, the bearing lip 41 having a bearing surface 44 and a backing surface 45 and the sealing lip 42 projecting beyond the abutment surface so as to seal against the opposing abutment surface 23 upon the joint bodies 11, 20 being pulled together as by a nut 26. As shown the higher pressure is inside the tube but when this is on the outside, the ring and groove are reversed.
