Abstract

Pistons for internal - combustion or other engines are provided with one or more split expanding rings formed with pockets for picking up oil during the forward stroke and releasing it during the return stroke. Fig. 4 shows a split ring 1 formed with a pocket a., the rear edge e of which picks up oil, while the forward edge e' is of reduced diameter and releases oil during the return stroke. In order to pick up surplus oil, a pocket a<1>, without a releasing edge, may be arranged to the rear of the pocket a, and separated from it by bearing surfaces. The pockets a, a' may be in the form of grooves, or of holes, or of elongated pockets, which may be tapered towards their ends. The pockets may be formed between two rings which may abut, or, as shown in Fig. 10, may be concentric rings 15, 16 with a pocket k between them.
