Abstract

1,171,671. Cutting inserts; milling cutters. MONTANWERKE WALTER G.m.b.H. 25 Jan., 1967 [25 Jan., 1966], No. 3650/67. Headings B3K and B3T. A reversible cutting insert for use in rotary cutting tools such as milling cutters comprises a polygonal flat plate, the sides of which are at right angles to the top and bottom faces A, B and the intersections between the sides and the faces forming primary cutting edges 1, the corners defined by the intersections between the sides being provided with facets 2 one associated with the top and bottom faces respectively at each corner to form secondary cutting edges 3. The facets are at an acute angle to their respective faces A, B. A plurality of cutting inserts are secured in a cutter body 5 with their primary cutting edges positioned on a common cutting circle. Also, one insert in the form of a finishing cutter may be incorporated in the cutter body so that the workpiece is subjected to rough and finishing cuts in one operation. The finishing cutter is of the same form as a roughing cutter and has the secondary cutting edges curved. The orientation and positioning of the finishing cutters in relation to the other inserts is arranged to effect uniform cutter loading and to control the chip formation.
