Abstract

842,250. Broaching-cutters. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Dec. 2, 1958 [April 14, 1958], No. 38810/58. Class 83 (3). A broach comprises a series of cutter-blocks 15a, 15b, each block having a series of cutterreceiving recesses shaped to position the cutters at the correct rake angle and cutting depth. The blocks 15a, 15b each have two transverse grooves in which the cutters are clamped by screw-operated wedges 30. The cutters 25 are of square cross-section and are reversible to provide eight cutting-edges. The blocks are positioned at an angle to the direction of cut A by ridges 14 on the broach body 12. By placing one shim 43 under one block, and two under the following block, a progressively deeper cut may be obtained. Alternatively, the seating recesses of the blocks may be made progressively shallower, or the top surface of the body 12 may be inclined to the direction of cut, the ridges 14 being replaced by removable projections.
