Abstract
1,169,447. Electro-phoretic coating. MITSUBISHI DENKI K.K. March 7, 1967 [March 7, 1966], No. 10652/67. Heading C7B. An electrically insulating coating is formed on an electrically conductive member by depositing the coating in a bath of the varnish dispersed in water by cataphoresis, applying to the coating an organic solvent at least partly soluble in water and then drying and hardening the coating. Phenol may be used as solvent when the varnish is a polystyrene resin, and dimethyl formamide or dimethyl acetamide when the varnish is an acrylonitrile resin. The drying and hardening treatment may comprise preliminary drying in the range 40 C. up to the final hardening temperature for 10 minutes to 1 hour, followed by heating at the final hardening temperature. As shown awire 10 is passed continuously through a cataphoretic coating bath 14 and then through a chamber 18 in which the coated wire is contacted by solvent vapour produced in a heated chamber 26. The upper end of chamber 18 is cooled by coils 30, 32 to prevent escape of vapour which is condensed and returns to the chamber 26. In an alternative arrangement Fig. 1 (not shown) the coated wire is sprayed with solvent issuing from nozzles in chamber 18.
